The Story Behind the Blog
I have personally experienced the harsh consequences of inadequate estate planning as my family members were forced to sell an expensive home in Newport Beach to pay for estate taxes due to the IRS. I have also seen other friends go through nightmare probates: where beneficiaries wait for years before receiving funds and in another instance, where the final distribution resulted in nothing because there was not enough direction and transparency during the probate process. It was my own family experiences that made me determined to go to law school and influenced my decision to practice estate planning.
The reason I started this blog is to share my thoughts and insights on issues surrounding estate planning. I strongly believe that if my family and friends would have done appropriate research and taken the time to ask for advice from a competent or trusted estate planning attorney, then many of the terrible consequences could have been avoided. The topics about estate planning might seem confusing and in some instances intimidating, but they should not be.
Another topic, I plan to discuss in my blog involves entrepreneurship. This area has been of interest to me since I was a teenager and owner of a small business in Palm Springs. After graduating UC Berkeley, but before law school, I worked as a senior research associate at VentureOne, an information provider to the venture capital industry, where I managed the primary research team and personally conducted telephone interviews with hundreds of CFO’s and CEO’s of venture-backed companies on financing issues. During and after law school I consulted small to medium-sized businesses on how to maximize profits and manage by the numbers. I also participated in associations located in Southern California, and was the Chairperson of the Management Education Committee for the Southern California Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors in 2006.
During my time at law school I received a Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Technology Law, as a result of my focus on entrepreneurial related coursework.
I currently assist in corporate and business planning for small to medium-sized businesses.
So why do a Blog in the California Desert?
I consider myself somewhat of a Coachella Valley native: as I graduated from Palm Springs High School (attended all four years); received an Associate of Science Degree from College of the Desert; and owned a small-business in the desert before leaving to attend UC Berkeley in northern California. While attending College of the Desert, I was the President of the Desert Rancher’s Club.
My family and I are now full-time residents of Palm Desert. My wife, Ana, is my marketing director and our daughter Isabella is currently attending a Montessori program. And of course our family has a pet Yorkie named Boots, and he wouldn’t let us forget to include him because he wants me to talk about Pet Trusts on the Blog, too.
